The future generation of NHRA stars took to the track during Saturday's O'Reilly Auto Parts Junior Drag Racing League Eastern Conference Finals presented by Gaged Engineering at Bristol Dragway and the list of winners highlights just how competitive the action was.
Six states were represented in winner's circle on Saturday afternoon, with racers from Maryland, Louisiana, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ohio receiving trophies.
In the 16-17 year-old division, Timothy Hotlzapple from York, Pa. claimed the win at the starting line when Aspers, Pa.'s Derek Riddle turned on the red light for leaving too soon. Holtzapple used a .062 reaction time, along with a 7.945 elapsed time (7.94 dial-in) at 83.30 to defeat the redlighting Riddle. Riddle, whose car earned the award for Best Theme, completed his pass in 7.921 seconds (7.90 dial-in) at 82.75 mph.
Colton Kirchner from Seven Valley, Pa. earned the 15-year-old division when he beat Brianna Sevik of Palos Hills, Ill. Kirchner's .011 reaction with a 7.943 E.T. (7.90 dial-in) at 82.59 mph knocked off Sevik's .065 light and 7.919 E.T. (7.90 dial-in) at 80.84 mph.
The 14-year-old division saw Fairborn, Ohio's Benjamin Browder oust April Spell from Jacksonville, Fla. when Spell jumped the start. Browder left with a .174 reaction and ran the track in 7.951 seconds at 81.47 mph. After the red light, Spell completed her run with an 8.118 E.T. at 80.15 mph.
Sean Serra of Reinholds, Pa. beat Kevin Adams from Terre Haute, Ind. in a close match-up to claim the 13 year-old-division. Serra turned in a .015 R.T. and completed his run in 7.933 seconds at 79.91 mph. Adams used a .017 light and 7.952 E.T. at 81.91 mph in the final round
The 12-year-old division win went to Lebanon, Ind.'s Nick Isenhower when his opponent, Scott Chitty of Uniontown, Ohio, left the line just .001 second early. Isenhower motored down the strip with an 8.916 E.T. at 75.26 mph to claim the win. Chitty drove through the lights with an 8.890 E.T. at 74.05 mph.
A.J. Williams from Thomasville, Ga. took the 11-year-old division win by using a .028 reaction and running an 8.994 E.T. at 69.52 mph. Woodbridge, Va.'s David Saunders had a slower .111 reaction and completed the run in 8.920 seconds at 69.90 mph.
Alyssa Hickey from Ponchatoula, La. drove her dragster to victory over Eric Bowman of Palm Coast, Fla. in the 10-year-old category. Hickey's .162 reaction time, matched with an 8.940 E.T. at 74.49 mph, defeated Bowman's .205 light and 9.029 E.T. at 73.05 mph.
In 8-9 year-old competition, Robert Estevez from Waldorf, Md. rolled to victory over Tinley, Ill.'s Nate Kelley. Estevez had a .090 light and a 13.035 E.T. at 46.81 mph. Kelley's .143 R.T. and 13.105 E.T. at 49.75 mph came up a little short in the battle.
Lexi Dixon, representing Bristol Dragway, reached the quarterfinals in the 8-9 year old division before losing to Nick Loffredo of Brick, N.J. The Abingdon, Va. native's .593 light, coupled with a 12.913 E.T. at 49.24 mph was not good enough to defeat Loffredo's .158 light with a 13.058 second pass at 49.95 mph.
Jade Dalton from Huntsville Dragway had the Best Overall Appearing car, while Spencer Lacey from Summit Motorsports Park was judged to have the Coolest Car. Maple Grove Raceway earned the team title.
Bristol Dragway returns to action July 19-20 with the Ferguson Enterprises Pro Mod Challenge.
