In what was billed as the "Battle of the Brands" at last weekend's O'Reilly Fun Ford Weekend at Bristol Dragway, the Ford's held true and claimed the top spot in several categories.
In an exciting Pro field, Dale Brinsfield of Oak Ridge, N.C. took home top honors over the Escort ZX2 of David Schorr. Brinsfield's 2008 Mustang left the line with a .024 light and completed the quarter-mile in 6.450 seconds at 219.65 mph. Schorr left with a .041 light, but broke traction putting an end to his run. He rolled through the lights in 13.708 seconds at 77.98 mph.
Conrad Scarry of Deerfield Beach, Fla. earned the Street Outlaw victory in easy fashion over Frank Mewshaw of Milbourne, Fla. Mewshaw's Trans Am broke before the final, giving Scarry the win. Scarry used a leisurely 1.390 reaction time, and an 8.260 elapsed time at 72.43 mph to earn the win.
Mac Sibley's 1978 Ford Fairmont earned the Street Bandit title against a red-lighting Tom Conrad Jr. of Charlottehall, Md. Sibley, a native of Midlothian, Texas, had a .053 R.T. and ran faster than the 10.60 Index by clocking a 10.568 E.T. at 125.37 mph. Conrad completed his run in 10.760 seconds at 122.76 mph.
The favor was returned to Conrad in Street Stang as his opponent James D'Amore of Freehold, N.J. turned on the red light in the final round. Conrad ran a 12.007 E.T. at 115.02 mph after a .042 R.T. D'Amore had an 11.925 E.T. at 111.77 mph.
S.D. Wheeler of Crosby, Texas earned the win in Ultra Stang by defeating Paul Gamino of Rosharon, Texas. Wheeler's .002 R.T. and 11.552 E.T. (11.552 dial-in) at 119.81 mph ousted Gamino's .104 R.T. and 10.488 E.T. (10.65 dial-in) at 130.53 mph.
Kingsport's Van Greer took home Mod Comp action over Shane Williams of Knoxville. Both cars ran faster than their dial-ins, but Greer ran closer to his. Greer's 1985 Escort left the line with a .033 R.T. and completed the pass in 10.811 seconds (10.84 dial-in) at 123.73 mph. Williams cut a .015 light, and ran 12.604 seconds (12.64 dial-in) at 104.95 mph.
Don Burton of Aberdeen, Md. (Street Renegade), Bluff City's Jim Statzer (True Street) and Paul Gamino of Rosharon, Texas (Tough Truck) also celebrated victories this weekend.
Action returns to Bristol Dragway with this weekend's AHDRA Rush Racing Products Thunder in the Valley Nationals presented by Smith Brothers' Harley-Davidson.
