Although school is back in session, it does not mean the fun at Bristol Dragway's Street Fights has to come to an end. On Saturday, Aug. 30, the Borla Back to School Bash will give racers one more chance to hit the track before hitting the books.
Shattered Bliss, a local band played on 99.3 ZRock, will lay down some tracks next to the strip, while any student wearing their college or high school apparel can register to win a 2009 Street Fights Season Pass.
Borla, the world-famous exhaust manufacturer, is relocating to Johnson City and plans to kick off its time in the Tri-Cities with this exciting event.
"Borla has a proud heritage in auto racing," said Chris Kaufmann, Borla Public Relations Manager. "Even after 30 years, we learn significantly from our racing endeavors around the world, be that Baja, LeMans or Bristol Dragway. If a weld will hold up in Brandon Bernstein's Top Fuel dragster, then we know it will both perform and survive on the street.
"Borla is extremely excited about our new partnership with Bristol. We are thrilled to have the famed Thunder Valley only a few minutes from our beautiful new Borla facility in Johnson City."
Also, on tap the Team Hurley USA King of the Strip True Street Challenge presented by Mac Tools returns for its final race of the season.
The King of the Strip participants make three runs down the quarter-mile, with the elapsed times averaged. The racer closest to their class index will take home several great prizes. In addition, the champions in each index will be crowned.
Jon Phillips leads the 9-second index, with Chuck Ryan and Jonathan Williams leading the 10- and 11-second classes respectively. Scott Vestal holds a one-point lead in the 12-second index, while Michelle Hatchen leads in 13-second competition. Chris Johnson holds on to the lead in a crowded 14-second field.
Gates open at 6:00, with racing beginning at 7:00. The action continues until midnight.
Admission is only $5. Those ready to challenge the quarter-mile can do so for only $10.
